The Square Feet of a Home Matters

Why is square footage such a hotly debated subject in real estate investing?
When it comes to selling a home, many buyers want as much square footage as they can get for their money. They often find a place with more square footage more attractive.

Another aspect is the price. When you add more space the cost “per square feet,” will go down. This is how they compare homes and plays into the buying decision.
Their is potential liability if you misrepresent the square feet of a home. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has a standard method for calculating this for single family dwellings, but there is not one for apartments or condos.

If you want to be sure you measure your home correctly, look at this document: “Square Footage - Method for Calculating.” It can be purchased from National Association of Home Building, Research Center, 400 Prince George’s Boulevard, Upper Marlboro, Maryland 20774.
