There was more unsettling news coming out of the Middle East this weekend, and its effect is being felt on Wall Street. Pakistan’s President, Pervez Musharraf, has sought emergency government control as he tries to quell those who oppose him. Close to four thousand people have been arrested as Musharraf has cracked down on radical Islamics. The problem is that much of Pakistan’s debt is funded by the west, and there is a growing sense that Musharraf is losing control of the country. There is a fear that a radical sect could take over power and destabilize the entire region, including Afghanistan which neighbors the country in crisis.
