One of the biggest
fears of an ecommerce owner is losing a computer or connection to a server.
Regular maintenance and prevention measures will ensure some issues don’t
arise.

When a computer
system is purchased, the manufacturer describes the computer as ready to use
"out of the box". Of course you have to get your personal software systems
installed and adequate virus and spyware protection enabled.

Once your system is
operational, you would think that it would continue to operate efficiently as
long as nothing is disturbed. The truth is that without regular maintenance,
your system could not only run poorly, but could fail causing your ecommerce
business to come to a screeching halt.

Be sure to add a few
daily and weekly events to your schedule:
daily and weekly events to your schedule:
- Leave your computer
running at all times. Turning on and off a computer is not good for the
hardware. Leave it on but turn off your monitor during off hours to save
energy. - Run a virus and
spyware scan daily. Don’t wait and do it weekly or monthly. Go into your
settings and set them to run at around 3 AM or any time that you are not needing
your system for a few hours. - Set your computer’s
hard drive to defrag on a regular basis. My best recommendation is to purchase
a third party disk management system that will keep your fragmentation to a
minimum. - Keep your cache and
temporary files clear each week. These little files will slow you down, find
the folder and set them to delete every Saturday. - Upgrade regularly.
Set all of your system settings to notify you of updates and check them before
installing. Some updates that are not required could be problematic. Update
your virus and spyware protection every 3 hours. Have these updates installed
automatically.
Keeping your online
business online should be a focused priority for you, be sure you take steps to
eliminate everything you can from happening to your system and ultimately to
your business.
