Warm weather is on the way and so are the costs of cooling your home. During parts of the warm and summer months, your energy costs can be the highest recurring expense for the season. Take some steps now to prepare for this increase in energy costs.
One of the first steps in preparing is to be financially prepared. Be sure you start now to put a little money in savings just in case you are hit with a large electric bill.
Here are few tips that will help you reduce your costs and save money:
- Install a digital thermostat - for the few hundred dollars or less you will save thousands over time.
- Be sure your exterior AC unit is placed free of shrubs and is in a shaded area of the yard.
- Close drapes on the sunny side of your house. You will greatly reduce heat by closing window blinds during the sunny part of a day.
- Install and operate ceiling fans, they will cool a home a few degrees without the help of an air conditioner.
- Turn of televisions and computers if not needed, the generate a lot of heat.
- Be sure to turn lights off when the room is not occupied.
- As much as possible, cook on an outside grill or use a microwave. A traditional oven will raise the temperature of your house 10 degrees in some cases.
Do all that you can and keep your other bills under control by curbing your spending and being sure that you try and keep the temperature of your house at a constant.
