We’ve received a few question about what it’s like starting an Internet business with the assistance of one of our coaches. I could probably write a couple of novels on the subject but I thought it best that you hear it from an actual student, someone just like you.

Debbie from Utah is a wife and mom. She wants to be a stay at home mom and raise her children.  But as you already know families are expensive. So she and her husband decided she would trying earning a living by starting a home based business. They decided to start an Internet business.

Here’s her story in her own words that she sent us just last month.

I am proud to say, we are Links for Learning, an online tutoring and homework help site established in August 2005 because of Prosper Inc.

For the past two years I have been working on my Master’s in Education with a teaching credential knowing that I was not going to be able to teach in a regular classroom. I have two kids and love being a stay at home mom and at this time in my life, it is impossible to work outside of the home.

My husband was constantly asking me what I would do with my degree and I would say that I was going to become an online tutor. It just made perfect sense because with that type of job I could have the flexibility of teaching at home with my children.

I talked about doing this for about a year until one day when he came home and said he signed us up to start our own online tutoring business through Prosper.

Tyler is on the sales floor at Prosper and has seen the success of the students he has brought into the program and knew we would be successful.

Tyler explained that we would be given assignments each week and the coaches hated it when the students didn’t do what they asked them. He knew that in order to be successful, we had to listen and do everything we were told to do each week.

One of his co-workers was working with our coach and would tell him how each week he would give more assignments and they couldn’t fall behind. I was so excited to start this program because my father had gone through the Real Estate Program and has bought, besides his other investments, a million dollar apartment complex in St. George, so I knew this package would be very effective.

I have to admit it was horrible timing, I was in the end of my Master’s Program and I had to start student teaching 2 weeks into the program for 10 weeks in a classroom from 8:00-2:30 everyday. That meant I would have to balance starting a new business, my kids, and a full time job. That is just another aspect of being successful, juggling what you have to do with what you want to do.

 I knew that our site was something that we would have to start from scratch, something that hadn’t been done by this company before and actually hasn’t really been done at all, making our business a pioneer in this industry.

The first session with our coach was great. The work was simple. He wanted us to put together a list of 400 keywords for our site. Having gotten my B.A. in Liberal Studies, research was a key component in this major making establishing different form of keywords simple.

Another aspect of the assignment was how simple our coach was able to lay out the responsibilities. He gave us a website that made it fun to put a combination of words together and see if there were enough hits on the words. He set up the explanation in a manner that made it easy to follow. I found myself not wanting to disappoint him and rushing to finish the assignment. 

I had this project finished within a day and emailed him our list asking for more to do. Our coach was able to give us little assignments to tide my ambition over until we met with him the following week.

The following week I was able to meet with Amber, who is a God Send to the Internet making business, she and I were able to agree on a logo within a day. Her logo was exactly what I was looking for, fun yet professional.

It was amazing to see the image of the company I had been thinking about for the past 2 years coming to life.

Amber was able to send me all the information I needed and was really good about fixing the minor problems I would find with the site, which was probably my miscommunication.

Within two weeks, my site was up and looking like a real internet business. I do have to mention that I have been visiting probably 100’s of other businesses a week while I am trying to market our site and I do have the best looking site on the internet. It is SO kid friendly and colorful, yet has a sense of class.

Each week we would speak with our coach in our weekly sessions, I think I would email him at least 3 times a day with questions about what we had talked about or something I had stumbled upon while working on our site.

Each assignment my husband and I would take with 110 %. If he asked for 3 press releases a month, we would do 5. Each assignment we saw as the greatest learning tool for our site. Here we were working with a personal coach who wanted our business to be a huge success and was handing us the “Secrets” of Internet advancement.

The assignments were simple, but did require the 10-20 hours a week time commitment, which was requested when we bought the package.

Now, our business is up and running. We have been placed in over 200 sites in MSN, over 100 in Yahoo, and about 64 in Google, all over an 11-week span. Our coach emailed us that our rank was a 3 on Google. We were contacted by Channel 4 news within a month and asked to collaborate with the UEA. We will be presenting a power point presentation to them later this month.

We have been talking with about 4 or 5 different companies that want to form a joint collaboration in putting our business in the classrooms and local libraries.

Within 10 weeks, we had been contacted by a School District in Northern California asking to place our tutoring service inside their classroom. A School District in which we had NO idea where they were located, and had to go to Map Quest to find out that information.

We are working with a local Provo School in putting our tutoring service in their school. We are getting at least 1

5 emails a day with online businesses that are linking our site on to their site. It might not seem like a lot, but you have to remember that we still haven’t finish up all our coaching sessions yet, making our success less than 12 weeks in the making. It is really amazing how fast this is happening because we followed what our coach suggested.
